We visited Sacred Heart High School and were welcomed by Mr Fegan and the Year 9 Student Body. We played two songs for them in assembly and received raucous applause in return. Then, we were given a tour of the school by some of the tour guides from Year 8 and 9 and we got to see what the school was like. After, we were given a lesson of ICT in how to use Adobe Flash. It was very fun and we learnt a lot.

We were taken to a class and were shown how classes are taught at Sacred Heart and then we had a delicious lunch. Thank you Sacred Heart for welcoming us into your school!

We also visited Cambridge were we saw a very big church which was very beautiful. We then, were given a tour on a gondola and a man rowed as along a river. It was very funny because the man kept making us laugh. After this, we went shopping and it was also hilarious when a girl in our class nearly got robbed!

There was an amazing international gathering of Sacred Heart students and staff at Sacred Heart Primary School in Newcastle on Monday 4^th April. Together with a non denominational school from Norway, about 15 students each from Sagrado Corazon Placeres in Spain and Sacré Coeur Vienna in Austria had a day in school at the beginning of a week long stay in the north of England. Funded by a Comenius grant, this was the third international visit, as the project “Fit for Europe” had already brought other youngsters from the schools together in Norway and Spain in the summer and autumn of 2010. Activities between the visits have examined aspects of healthy living, exercise and the impact of lifestyle on the environment. Through exchange on the internet, “European” weeks/ days, and displays the students have learned so much about themselves and each other at the same time as gaining a real sense of their European identity.

While the pupils who went to Spain and Norway had the excitement of witnessing the light nights of Scandinavia, enjoying the Galician beaches, visiting St James of Compostella and sampling the traditional dishes of these countries, the project came alive for the rest of Sacred Heart Primary this April as the school buzzed with the presence of all these visitors. Special assemblies, shared lunches, sessions with “Expo Chefs” sat alongside normal school life. For part of the week the visitors together with some Year 6 went to the Lake District to sample walking on the fells, rock climbing, canoeing and gorge walking.  A tourist’s tour of Newcastle on Friday was rounded off with a farewell party back at school where they were joined by parents, governors and friends before a final night at the Diocesan Youth Village and departures.

Kevin Foster, headteacher of Sacred Heart Primary, Fenham, says that the benefits for his students are enormous. “They have had so much fun, but their awareness of the benefits of learning other languages, the importance of understanding and respecting other cultures and how vital clear communication is has shot up. Imagine at the age of 10 sharing your room with an Austrian, a Spaniard and a Norwegian: we’ve been preparing these young people for the UN!”  Talking to Year 6 on their return from Spain last October the beach figured large in their favourite memories as did the glass bottomed boat trip, and the “lush” school buildings, but I was struck by the number of comments about how well their peers spoke English and how much easier it is to make friends with people from other countries than they had ever thought.

This is not the first time the children in Fenham have benefited from being part of the international network of Sacred Heart Schools. This academic year saw the rounding up of an earlier Fairtrade project when two staff from Sagrado Corazon in Mexico came to Newcastle in October 2010 and three staff from Fenham went to Mexico at February half term. Earlier activities had led to the handing over of sewing machines to a group of women in  Queretaro, a poor district in Northern Mexico. Since the link began the primary has begun to celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Guadeloupe and in March 2011 both schools joined in Fairtrade Fortnight’s attempt to make the longest bunting in the world when pupils in both countries made pennants with images to promote the message of Fairtrade.

Mr Foster now has plans for a further project based on the Olympics….

Dates:  Wednesday 10th October at 7.00pm to Saturday 13^th October at 9.00am, with the possibility of an extra day in Paris.

Costs: accommodation, meals, conference fee at Joigny: 120€ per person.If required accommodation in Paris can be booked at Centre Adèle Picot (see document sent to head teachers)

Languages: possibly French, English, Spanish (main delivery languages will depend on participants)

Programme :

Wednesday: arrivals (if possible for supper at 7.00pm), information and welcome session.

Thursday: Madeleine Sophie at Joigny, her story, visit of the house, visit of the town,    group work, moments of prayer, reflections. Evening: cultural exchange.

Friday: Day of reflection on Sacred Heart spirituality, including visit to the vineyards

Newcastle and Mexico
A lasting link between Sacred Heart School in Newcastle and Mexico

Sacred Heart schools in these two cities set up a fair-trade project together three years ago. One result of this was that the Newcastle school collected money to buy four sewing machines for homeless women in El Qeretaro, a poor district in Northern Mexico. Read more…

Outreach to Uganda 2010/11

In July 2010 students from St Catherine’s College Armagh, Northern Ireland painted 4 classrooms at St Bernadette’s, Jinja. The school has been taking part in projects in Uganda and Kenya since 2003, under the leadership of Sr Carmel Flynn rscj. This year the English Network Coordinator joined them as a group from Newcastle will be going this year . Here are some of her memories of the trip.
